Before the discovery of insulin, there were two choices for people diagnosed with diabetes mellitus:
(The latter often led to death after a prolonged, tortured existence.)
Sir Frederick Banting, Charles Best, Bert Collip, and J.J.R. Macleod — the co-discoverers of insulin — understood that their Hippocratic Oath forbade them from making a profit off of their discovery. In fact, all of the work they did to make the discovery was done virtually unfunded.
Today, the very province, in the very country, in which they made this discovery does not allow those living with diabetes to access insulin for free.
As someone living with Type 1 Diabetes in the Province of Ontario, I am saying this:
Type 1 Diabetes has no cure.
There is no alternative to insulin.
The Governments of Canada and Ontario need to ensure that insulin will be free for anyone living with Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational Diabetes, regardless of:
