CP lockout ends
but business propaganda continues

Jeremy Appel reports from Calgary on the short CP Rail lockout which ended earlier this week, and the mainstream media failures and business propaganda that surround it.

In brief: Federal anti-scab law

The new federal parliamentary agreement between the minority Liberal government and New Democratic Party contains many legislative promises in exchange for support on “confidence and supply” bills. A national pharmacare plan and a limited dental care plan are among the major promises.

Also included is promised support for a federal anti-scab law. A federal anti-scab law would ban the use of scabs by employers in workplaces under the federal labour code. This would cover about 10 percent of Canadian workers in sectors such as rail, air, federal public service, postal services, banking and broadcasting.

Only Quebec and British Columbia have provincial anti-scab laws.

Scab Busters: Postal workers take on the scabs during the violent 1987 Canada Post strikes. This was the last major clash between scabs and striking workers at a workplace under the federal labour code. r0
