RBC and TD

RBC and TD just held their most important meetings of the year and SumOfUs members like you sent a clear message to Canada’s biggest banks: they must respect Indigenous rights and defund climate chaos NOW!

At RBC, SumOfUs members went the distance and secured speaking spots at the meeting for Wet’suwet’en chiefs, who continue fighting against the disastrous Coastal GasLink pipeline.

Despite RBC’s best efforts to shut down opposition – RBC went as far as canceling the in-person portion of the meeting 18 hours before the event, when the chiefs had just arrived at the airport – the CEO had his feet held to the fire. The CEO was bombarded with questions about Indigenous rights, pipeline funding and the bank’s massive funding of the fossil fuel industry that goes against the best climate science.

After the meeting, Indigenous leaders and allies marched to RBC’s headquarters making headlines on Globe and Mail and Reuters. Meanwhile, groups around the country organized 34 actions at RBC branches during the AGM, sending a clear message to executives that climate action and Indigenous rights can’t be ignored or green washed away.

Then, just one week later, you held TD’s feet to the fire, presenting a shareholder proposal filed by SumOfUs members, calling on the bank to stop funding fossil fuel expansion – something that the science says is necessary to stop catastrophic climate change.

You also were able to secure a speaking spot for the spokesperson for the Tsleil-Waututh nation, who have been fighting the Trans Mountain pipeline for over a decade. They are now planning for a meeting with high level TD execs.

Again, you ensured that Indigenous rights could not be ignored, and pushed for bold climate action.

Will you continue the pressure on TD by signing a petition calling TD to stop financing fossil climate change now?

We know your pressure makes a difference. Since starting this campaign 4 years ago, your pressure has forced Canada’s banks to make climate commitments they never dreamed of making, and has put the spotlight on their bad behaviour.

None of this could have happened without you. The banks can’t dodge their awful policies that put Indigenous lives and livelihoods at risk, and that destroy our climate.

With your help, we will keep the pressure on!

Call on TD to stop financing fossil climate change now.

Thanks for all that you do,
Amelia, Angus and the team at SumOfUs
