A,
SumOfUs members are holding Google accountable at its upcoming annual shareholder meeting and we need your help.
In days investors will vote on two shareholder resolutions filed by the SumOfUs community demanding Google become transparent about whether it protects human rights.
If you have a pension, mutual fund, or superannuation fund, you probably own shares in Google — which means you have the power to influence the vote on these resolutions and hold this multi-trillion dollar company accountable.
It’s quick and... easy to send a message to your fund manager and could have a massive impact since they don’t often hear from investors directly. Click to send a message, then share this with other investor friends:
Tell your fund manager: make Google live up to its promises
Google portrays itself as a company that cares about human rights but dangerous disinformation is rife on its most popular platforms like YouTube. Even more alarming, it plans to build centers storing sensitive personal data in places with appalling human rights records, like Saudi Arabia.
For all Google’s boasts of strong human rights commitments, the company does not carry through with the disclosures that are central to the human rights standards they claim to support.
Yet Google tried to block our resolutions when they were filed so shareholders could not even discuss and vote on them. They even tried to say that a vague BLOG post was good enough to replace an actual report! The SEC turned down Alphabet and ruled for shareholders to have the chance to speak up and to vote.
Support for these proposals is gaining steam. A string of news stories is putting the company on notice that its policies are being examined by investors – and human rights groups are welcoming our work.
But our shareholder resolution will only succeed if Google's biggest investors - like your pension or mutual fund - vote for our plan. That’s where you come in.
Fund managers don’t often hear from their investors. So this will really get their attention. And with Google’s biggest investors already deciding how to vote on this year’s proposals, we need to act now.
