Dear Friend,

As students head back to school and concerns regarding youth safety grow, so too do the responsibilities of educators to oversee and prevent threats to the wellbeing of the student body. Given that students are now walking around with a wealth of personal information in their pockets, what implications does this have for student privacy and freedom of expression?

Introducing our new public legal education project Digital Privacy Rights for Youth!

The BCCLA is here to help protect your privacy rights. With more and more of our lives involving electronic devices, it’s easy to forget the volume of information you’re carrying with you. For many, it is an entire library – years of correspondence, personal conversations, photos, web surfing history, and reading habits – all stored on one device.

In our new educational resources and animated videos, we’re informing teachers, students, and... their guardians on how to keep all this data safe! Our new Digital Privacy Rights for Youth guides focus on three areas:

  • Personal Electronic Device Searches in Classrooms
  • Student Freedom of Expression Online
  • Police Searches of Cellular Phones

This project is the result of months of work and research from lawyers, artists, law students, staff, and teachers. Your support helps make this work possible. Thank you for being on our side.

Sincerely,

Mara Selanders (she/her)
Staff Counsel, Policy (Community)

This project was supported by a grant from CIRA’s Community Investment Program and The Law Foundation of Ontario. The BCCLA is solely responsible for all content.
