As one-third of Pakistan was submerged underwater, activists around the world staged demonstrations in solidarity with Pakistan’s flood victims, calling for debt cancellation and climate reparations for the global South. Shown above is a demonstration of Filipino climate activists in Manila.
In Washington, DC., local and national organizations, including the Democratic Socialists of America (International Committee), CODEPINK, ShutDown DC, BOL Worker Owned Bookstore and others gathered outside the U.S. Capitol Building to demand relief and reparations. "Climate Jobs" is a growing organizing concept put forward by groups seeking to build a working class movement around climate, social, and economic justice. This weekend's conference will bring together people from around the world to discuss how to build power at the intersection of the labor and climate movements. From 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Eastern, there will be two days of thematic sessions about the strategies, technical and social perspectives, and challenges we face in building Climate Jobs Campaigns. On September 23, youth in countries around the world will lead a Global Climate Strike to demand that policymakers and world leaders prioritize #PeopleNotProfit! Fridays for Future is demanding that governments in wealthy countries listen to MAPA (Most Affected People and Areas) voices and immediately work to provide Loss & Damage Finance to the communities most affected by the climate crisis.
