Paov,
In 2018, the Trudeau government set up a fund to help provinces and municipalities prepare for the catastrophic weather events becoming all-too-common thanks to decades of climate inaction.
The $3.3 billion was meant to last over a decade. News just broke that it's already running out.1
Meanwhile, the same government has spent nearly 7 times as much taxpayer money ($21.4 billion and counting) on expanding the Trans Mountain pipeline, a project guaranteed to make the climate crisis worse. As communities across Canada struggle to recover from unprecedented fires, storms and floods, all while competing for scarce federal funding to prepare for the next climate disaster, Big Oil is making record profits off our backs.
It's time our so-called leaders got their priorities straight. We just launched a new petition calling on Prime Minister Trudeau and Environment Minister Guilbeault to tax the fossil fuel industry’s excess profits and fund a rapid, just transition to clean energy.
I can't stress enough how important it will be for us to take action together in the weeks ahead. Trudeau will be trying to present himself as a climate leader as his government prepares for the UN climate conference coming up next month. It's our job to ensure that he – and our communities – know that true climate leadership means holding Big Oil accountable.

In solidarity,
Katie
