Announcing CoDev's Newest Partnership!
Paulo Freire
We are pleased to announce that CoDev has recently entered into a partnership with the Paulo Freire Institute in Sao Paolo, Brazil, and the BCTF.
The Paulo Freire Institute (PFI) has promoted transformative education aiming to combat injustice, violence, exclusion, and the degradation of life. Self-determination and self-organization are its core ideologies that it promotes in schools as well as adult learning environments. PFI actively encourages Paulo Friere's philosophy that your own knowledge and life experience form the basis of education.
In 2015, this work prompted UNESCO to grant both PFI and its collection of educational materials, the Historical Heritage designation as the memory of Latin America and the Caribbean, and in 2017, of Humanity (in general).
Brazilian President Bolsonaro has carried out a smear campaign against the PFI believing that literacy initiatives are subversive and threaten traditional hierarchy. His administration has used this position to justify budget cuts to public education.
Our stalwart Canadian partner, the BCTF stepped up to partner with the PFI, offering institutional strengthening and support for the promotion of democratic pedagogies. We are grateful to the BCTF for their participation and generosity.
