CoDev Winter Appeal 2022

Dear Friend of CoDev,

The Totlahtol Yoltok (“Our Living Word”) Teachers’ Collective was founded in 2013 by Indigenous teachers in the State of Veracruz in Mexico, in the wake of mobilizations standing up for public education, labour rights, and pedagogical resistance. Their mission is to recover the identities and traditions of the Indigenous peoples and challenge the colonization of knowledge that has for centuries shaped learning among Mexican children and youth.

A partner of CoDev’s since 2017, Totlahtol Yoltok has worked on alternative pedagogical proposals to recover and promote Indigenous identities, cultures, and language. Totlahtol Yoltok’s members undergo training and research pedagogical alternatives for different educational levels. Their research is based on an intercultural educational philosophy that seeks to rescue ancestral knowledge and develop classroom content by engaging the community. Totlahtol Yoltok promote the values of traditional agriculture and concept and practice of “Vivir bien” (“Living Well”), or living in harmony and in equilibrium with the environment.

With CoDev’s support, Totlahtol Yoltok is currently facilitating workshops to promote the revitalization of the Nahuatl language, the ancestral calendar and its connection to agriculture, and the oral history and ancestral rituals of the local Indigenous Peoples.

During a recent exchange with the teachers’ collective in Orizaba, Veracruz, CoDev had the opportunity to participate in a sociopolitical and cultural gathering with teachers, community members, and government representatives. During the event, Totlahtol Yoltok celebrated the contributions of recently-retired teachers for their dedication to the struggle to defend public education and improve labour conditions in the state of Veracruz. Totlahtol Yoltok also honoured the memory of teachers who lost their lives to COVID-19. CoDev’s presence helped Totlahtol Yoltok to demonstrate to the government representatives present that Totlahtol Yoltok’s work with the local educational communities is supported by international organizations.

This is an example of direct international solidarity in practice

CoDev’s partners have made a difference in 2022, both in Latin America and here in British Columbia. But there is still more to do. With your support, CoDev will strengthen the network of partners.

Your donation of $50, $75 or even $100 will enable CoDev to support our core programs:
  • Building broad-based support for public education – working with teachers, students, and indigenous groups across North America and Latin America to defend free, quality public education
  • Protecting labour rights – working with women workers to address their fundamental rights to occupational health and safety
  • Strengthening community-led development – creating diverse networks of community leaders defending their human rights
  • Involving Canadians in global issues – working with people in Canada to build support for social, economic, and environmental alternatives, such as fair trade
Most important, your continued support signals to our partners in Latin America that we are all part of a global struggle to transform our communities into safe, healthy, sustainable places in which to live, work, and play. Join us as we work towards global justice.

In solidarity,

Deanna Fasciani
