news and action Saturday December 3, 2022 We’re headed into a time of year often referred to as ‘the season of giving’. But B.C. doesn’t limit its giving to the month of December. We hand over our tax money, fresh water, land and future prospects to gas companies 365 days a year.

There’s seemingly no end to our generosity! According to our friends at Stand, B.C. is about to double the amount of freshwater we hand over to fracking companies, bumping up to 10 billion litres a year.

No need to include a receipt, they won’t be returning our gift. Frackers use that water to extract methane, permanently polluting it and disposing it in a way that takes it out of Earth’s... water cycle.

And why stop there? Instead of the lump of coal the oil and gas industry deserves, the people living in B.C. gave them $1 billion of our tax money each year. These companies have taken that money and invested it in expediting climate change. So I guess that gift was a two-for: here’s our money AND our future. Enjoy!

Indigenous communities in northern B.C. are being forced to face oil and gas expansion projects head on to protect their health, land and water. It’s the ultimate secret Santa they didn’t ask for, don’t want and shouldn’t have to deal with on their own.

The places, resources and future of this province should not be gifts served on a platter for industry to use as they please. The gravy train needs to stop.

But when it comes to supporting things people living in B.C. and Canada actually care about, like climate action, we’ve seen folks step forward in droves. Dogwood staff were overwhelmed this week when more than 300 folks chipped in to our Giving Tuesday campaign, helping us reach our goal and then some. That generosity puts us on track to start 2023 off strong.

Thank you for supporting this work in all the ways you can. We're grateful to you.
