Trudeau and Goodall, NBD

Dear PAOV,
Yesterday was a *bit* of a big day at The Narwhal.
First, our B.C. biodiversity reporter Ainslie Cruickshank got the opportunity to do
a sit-down interview with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the global biodiversity summit in Montreal.
When I heard of the interview with Trudeau, I immediately thought back to the early days of dreaming about The Narwhal. Five years ago, I scribbled down my goals for this as-yet-unnamed publication and guess what was on the list?
“We will get sit-down interviews with political leaders.”
It’s happening, I thought. It’s really happening.
What else was on the list?
“We will have super-powered ambassadors.”
Queue the next amazing thing that happened yesterday: I got to interview Jane Goodall and she told me she knows about The Narwhal — and had been given a copy of our print edition during her trip to Canada earlier this year. (Stay tuned for the full transcript of our conversation!)
When I realized that both of these events were happening on the same day, I immediately texted my co-founder Carol Linnitt — who’s been on maternity leave these last seven months — to let her know about all the excitement.
Because here’s the thing: when you’ve got your head down, trying to do the nearly impossible task of running a sustainable, ad-free, reader-funded magazine doing risk-taking environmental journalism, it’s easy to lose track of how far we’ve come.
But thanks to you, we’ve grown from being just two young women with a dream to being Canada’s largest environment bureau, shifting the landscape of what’s possible both for the natural world and the media world.
Last year, we became the first English-language non-profit news organization in Canada to be able to issue tax receipts, which means
any donation you make by Dec. 31 will earn you a 2022 tax receipt. And not only that, but a generous group of donors has stepped up to match every dollar you give between now and the end of the year. So
give $100 today and it becomes $200. Give $250 and it becomes $500.
Every dollar you give helps us do ground-breaking environmental journalism that holds power to account.
Tusks up,
Emma Gilchrist
Co-founder and editor-in-chief
P.S. As a new donor said as he signed up this morning: “I love what The Narwhal has done for our planet, democracy and hope for a better future.”
Choose to be hopeful by giving what you can to The Narwhal before the end of the year. Bonus: every dollar will be doubled!
Let’s make double the difference
