Paov,
This is one of my favourite emails to write. Every December, we take a moment to look back at the year, and look to the future. This moment always fills me with gratitude for the bold, unapologetic, people-powered climate movement we have built together over the years. Thank you for everything you have done to support 350 Canada and the climate movement.
For three years, we have been in a collective struggle grappling with a global pandemic and economic uncertainty that has upended how we show up and organize together. Despite this, we accomplished some amazing things together in 2022. We have a lot to celebrate.
In March, over 50 communities from coast to coast to coast took to the streets as part of the Day of Action for a Just Transition. From Victoria to Winnipeg to Lunenburg, thousands of people used art... and theatre to bring our collective vision for a Just Transition to life. That day of action successfully pushed the federal government to make progress towards just transition legislation. Through the year, we kept up the momentum with creative tactics like a fake Ministry of Just Transition to show what a bold government response to the climate crisis can look like, a campaign to flood the just transition consultation process with messages calling for bolder action, and more.
We wrapped up the year with a push for the Trudeau government to tax the fossil fuel industry’s excess profits to fund a Just Transition. The Tax Big Oil campaign brought thousands of new people into our movement, tapping into rising public outrage about Big Oil’s greed. At the start of December, we joined our friends at Leadnow and Greenpeace to deliver over 35,000 petition signatures calling for an oil and gas windfall profits tax, with MPs Mike Morrice, Laurel Collins, and Elizabeth May committing to continue the fight in the halls of power.
Paov, help us celebrate everything we’ve accomplished together this year by watching and sharing the new video recapping our biggest moments from 2022.
We are ending the year how we hope to start 2023: by reflecting on what it means to organize in these unprecedented times and determining how we can make the biggest possible contribution in the fight for true climate justice. We are living through harsh political realities right now. Millions of us are struggling to make ends meet, while the fossil fuel giants make record profits off our backs. It is infuriating to watch our government delay critical action while communities are left to rebuild and prepare for worsening climate disasters.
That’s why in 2023, if we are going to win big, we need to think big. We will continue to fight tooth and nail to make Big Oil pay its fair share for climate impacts, and keep the pressure on our government to implement bold climate action at the pace science and justice demand. And we’ve started building plans to win bold, transformative climate solutions.
Can you take two minutes to watch and share our 2022 recap video to help us reach as many people as possible?
Even though we’re up against some hard realities, we’re ending this year feeling hope and joy. We have accomplished so much together over the years, and it was only possible because of your support.
We will continue to push for bold climate solutions in 2023, and in order to see those plans through, we will be asking for your support through the rest of December. Every single contribution, big or small, makes a huge difference for the impact our work can have. We know these are difficult times, so if you aren’t able to donate this season, that’s okay. We will be in touch in the New Year with other ways to build the people power we need to take down the fossil fuel industry.
We look forward to standing with you arm in arm in 2023 to fight for justice, for people and for the planet.
In solidarity,
Amara and the entire 350.org Canada team
