Paov,

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith met face-to-face for the first time yesterday. With all the recent coverage of Smith’s demand that Trudeau scrap the long-promised Just Transition Act, you would expect that crucial piece of legislation to dominate the headlines.

What is the media focusing on instead? An awkward handshake.1

That’s convenient for both Trudeau and Smith because it keeps the spotlight away from the fact that Canada is not prepared for the inevitable and accelerating transition to clean energy. Despite dire warnings from climate scientists, Alberta oil production reached a new record last year2 and the federal government is still wasting billions building new pipelines to help the fossil fuel industry keep expanding.

This is all happening as Big Oil reports another round of staggering profits and walks back their climate pledges3. Behind the scenes, they’re lobbying for billions in public subsidies for unproven carbon capture technologies.4

Paov, it’s time to remind the politicians responsible for Canada’s just transition plan that we expect bold action, not more giveaways for... Big Oil. Take one minute to sign our new petition and help us send a clear message to PM Trudeau, Natural Resources Minister Wilkinson, and Labour Minister O’Regan.

SIGN THE PETITION

Canada stands at a crossroads: embrace a just transition or continue down the dangerous path of fossil fuel expansion. This plan, whether it's called the Just Transition Act or the Sustainable Jobs Act, could be a huge step towards a better future for all of us. But we need to do it right. And that means rejecting fossil fuel executives’ demands for more delays and handouts.

Take action with us and let’s send the strongest possible message to Trudeau, Wilkinson and O’Regan: introduce the just transition plan now and work across party lines to make sure it’s as bold and ambitious as we need.

SIGN THE PETITION

Together, we can cut through the media circus and bring the focus back to what matters: a bold energy transition plan that puts people first, supports the most affected communities, guarantees good, green, unionized jobs, and aligns with climate science.

Onwards,

Amara
