It’s been a brutal couple of weeks for journalists in Canada.

First, Postmedia — which owns newspapers like the Vancouver Sun and Calgary Herald — announced it’s laying off 11 per cent of its editorial staff.

Then last week, Victoria’s upstart Capital Daily laid off half of its journalists.

As we watch many talented journalists lose their jobs, here at The Narwhal we find ourselves thanking our lucky stars for you, our loyal newsletter subscribers.

While for-profit media companies cut journalists to protect the bottom line, The Narwhal’s non-profit model is thriving — but it only works because thousands of people like you read and share The Narwhal.
