These cells have no windows, have no seatbelts, and people sitting in them are most often handcuffed behind their backs. With no use of their hands, arrestees must steady... themselves by wedging their feet against the back or side of the wagon. Numerous injuries have been reported from rides in these wagons, and often people report receiving “rough rides” which have been perceived as punishment . One person died in the back of the wagon in Vancouver and one person is currently suing the New Haven police department after being rendered paraplegic after a ride in a police wagon. Many arrestees are left with trauma from the wagons and often do not have a supportive environment in which to heal after being released from custody.
Eight land and water defenders and allies are being sentenced on Sepwepecmc’ulecw territory (Kamloops) beginning on February 21. Several live in the lower mainland and will be sent to Alouette women’s prison. They have asked to be sentenced in the lower mainland to make the transport process easier; however, they have been ordered to attend Kamloops court. Once sentenced (they are expecting anywhere between 1 and 6 months), they will be transported in the police wagon to Alouette prison in Maple Ridge, over the Coquihalla, during winter. The trip will take at least 4 ½ hours. Anyone who has ridden in the wagon knows how torturous they are. One gets dislocated in time and space. Without being able to see outside, transportees are not able to brace themselves if they see danger. A long trip through the mountains in a wagon will create mental anguish, and could cause to life-threatening injuries.
Police wagon transport is unsafe, inhumane and morally reprehensible and these wagons should be removed from service immediately until more safe and humane vans are made available.
