All eyes on Wetsuweten

No matter how much our governments invest in clean energy, we will not achieve a just transition if we let Big Oil keep sucking up public money and trampling Indigenous rights. r1

Paov,

Big Oil’s grip on our political system has been on full display this week.

On Tuesday, the Trudeau government released their 2023 budget. Thanks to years of pressure from our movement, the plan includes significant new investments in renewable energy and electrification, but those investments pale in comparison to the billions in federal subsidies propping up the fossil fuel sector. Instead of keeping his promise to phase out these supports, Trudeau’s new budget funnels even more public money to Big Oil through tax breaks for fake solutions like blue hydrogen and carbon capture.1

Then, yesterday morning, a large RCMP force raided a Gidimt’en village site on unceded Wet’suwet’en territory, arresting five Indigenous land and water defenders. It’s part of a pattern of harassment and intimidation that police and private security have unleashed on Wet’suwet’en members, all for the sake of a fracked gas pipeline that directly undermines Canada’s climate pledges.2

Paov, no matter how much our governments invest in clean energy, we will not achieve a just transition if we... let Big Oil keep sucking up public money and trampling Indigenous rights.

Let Trudeau know you’re paying attention in this critical moment. Take one minute to sign the petition calling for a just transition that puts people first, not corporate greed.

IPCC climate scientists are sounding the alarm about how little time we have to secure a livable future. They said we need decisive government action to phase out fossil fuels but Budget 2023 shows that Trudeau is taking his hands off the wheel and relying on corporate Canada to lead the energy transition.3

The climate crisis is an existential threat and oil and gas production is Canada's largest source of greenhouse gas emissions. We can't leave our future in the hands of the same people who caused the problem.

Sign the petition now and demand a truly just transition that priortizes workers, communities, and Indigenous rights.

In solidarity,

Amara

PS: Help us put pressure on the RCMP, Coastal Gaslink and their funders and make sure their latest acts of colonial violence on Wet’suwet’en territory doesn’t go unnoticed. Use this toolkit to quickly spread the word on social media. If you have a few more minutes, make a phone call to the BC government and RCMP.
