I want to start by thanking you for taking the time to read this petition. We are the parents of an amazing 4 year old who has Type... One Diabeties (T1D). He is set to enter the Newfoundland and Labrador School System in 2023. Currently there is no standardizedsafe school plan in place to care for children with Type One Diabetes.

By signing this petition, you are asking the ministers of Health and Education in Newfoundland & Labrador to sit down with the Janeway Diabetic team.

The Goal? To develop a standard plan, for all school systems to follow, creating a safe school environment for type one diabetic children.

Newfoundland & Labrador is one of the TOP provinces with Type One Diabetic Diagnosis and in 2023 there is NO government policy or directive for administration of insulin by school staff which has resulted in lack of support and standardization.

Unfortunately, administration of insulin in schools, whether through injection or pump infusion, continues to be an issue across this province. At present, NL is one of the last remaining provinces who do not have such a document or directive.

Currently it is not standard for schools to administer insulin in our province.

The side effects of hyperglycemia from high sugars CAN impact learning. Symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, difficulty focusing, blurred vision, frequent washroom visits, thirst, etc.…all of this is disruptive to learning, which is what the Department of Education NEEDS to know.
