Dear Friend,
The fight for pharmacare is on, and we just scored a major win! On Tuesday the NDP tabled a bill for universal, public, single-payer pharmacare. Even though about 90% of Canadians of all political stripes support pharmacare, the path towards implementation has been a rough one, thanks to intense lobbying from Big Pharma and the insurance industry.
The Council of Canadians has been working with allied organizations across the country over decades to bring pharmacare to fruition. In the last few months, we hosted 16 town halls across the country to drive up the pressure on government to deliver pharmacare, and it’s working.
Seeing this bill on the table is a huge step, but the fight isn’t over.
Big Pharma and the insurance lobby will no doubt step up their efforts to make sure this legislation doesn’t pass, or is watered down if it does. We need to push just as hard to make sure the legislation we get is really what we need: Public. Universal. Single-payer. Now.
TELL YOUR MP THAT PHARMACARE CAN’T WAIT Under our current system Canadians are getting sick, going into debt, even dying because they can’t get the medication they need. We can’t wait a second more. Contact your MP, tell them they must support this legislation.
With hope and resolve,

P.S. A few things are likely to happen now that this legislation has been introduced. People are likely ease off because they’ll assume things will get finalized behind closed doors. This means that we need to crank up our efforts to knock on doors, organize, and keep up the pressure. And while we’re doing that, Big Pharma and the insurance companies will reach deep into their pockets to stop us.
