Update on pharmacare

Update on pharmacare r1 ... r71 | Add us to your address book Public Pharmacare Now

Dear Friend,

It’s been quite a wild ride since we launched the campaign for public pharmacare in February! After kicking things off with a press conference in Ottawa and an online webinar hosted by filmmaker and activist Avi Lewis, we took the show on the road with a series of town hall meetings. Since then, we’ve made tremendous progress towards building a grassroots, pan-Canadian movement for public pharmacare and its clear that our efforts are shifting the political calculus around pharmacare. Just last week we saw the NDP table the Canada Pharmacare Act, which would bring about the kind of public, universal program we’ve been calling for!

Over the course of April, May, and June, Council of Canadians chapters and local organizers hosted 16 town hall meetings across the country, from Victoria, B.C. to Halifax, Nova Scotia. At these events, experts, health professionals, and patient advocates spoke about the human reality behind the statistics, about what it feels like to “fall through the cracks” of our patchwork drug insurance system, about why we need public pharmacare now.

Together, we signed up more than 230 people to meet with their MPs, canvass their communities and distribute window signs to their neighbors. We raised money, we raised political expectations, and we raised the issue of pharmacare in local, regional, and national media.

After such an intense bout of activity, it is important to take time to gather together and reflect on what we’ve accomplished together and what comes next.

With that in mind, we’d like to invite you to a pharmacare campaign debriefing next week, at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday, June 29th via Zoom. The debriefing will be an opportunity to take stock of what we’ve accomplished together, assess the current moment, and look at what’s on the political horizon, as well as consider what tactics and strategies are needed to win free medicines for all.

(And for those who are new to the campaign, the meeting will be a chance to connect with local organizers and learn more about what we’ve been up to.)
