BC will stand united: No tar sands pipelines!
Hi PAOV,
As you may have already heard, the federal government has just announced its approval of Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline proposal.
This is simply unacceptable!
The announcement comes after a recommendation made by the National Energy Board’s review panel in December stating that the pipeline was in the “public interest”, subject to 209 conditions.
Thousands of concerned citizens like you stood up for the coast and let decision-makers know that this pipeline was NOT in Canada’s best interest – but they didn’t listen!
Meanwhile, regulators are also considering yet another giant tar sands pipeline: Kinder Morgan’s proposed Trans Mountain project. Over and over, we’ve said no to both of these risky proposals, and on both fronts, our federal government has chosen not to listen to us.
But these pipelines are not built yet, and I don’t expect they ever will be.
Right now there are at least five legal challenges against the Northern Gateway project, all of which require resolution before the pipeline can be constructed. There is also already a legal challenge registered by the Tsleil-Waututh First Nation against the Kinder Morgan pipeline.
We’ve made it clear that we won’t accept the threat of a tar sands oil spill in our coastal waters, or the guaranteed carbon spill into our atmosphere. The forces opposed to this reckless regard for our climate and our coast are building a bullet-proof movement – a powerful coalition of First Nations, local governments, unions and environmentalists who are all working together to defeat a common threat.
We must continue to stand together in our united opposition to the Northern Gateway and Kinder Morgan tar sands pipelines. Our First Nations allies will need our support in the coming months as they put themselves in the public spotlight in the name of what is right.
Please use our letter-writing tool to send a message to the federal government, as well as BC Premier Christy Clark, and urge them to turn their backs on dirty tar sands pipelines. We have come so far in the fight to prevent our climate from becoming hostile and our coast from being destroyed – now it’s time to take the next step and remind our political representatives how strong this movement really is!
