This isn’t over yet. We can still r33
The federal government has just approved the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline and tankers, subject to the 209 conditions set out by the Joint Review Panel last year.
It’s hardly a surprise, from a government that consistently ignores warnings from global climate scientists and prioritizes the interests of big oil over the interests of British Columbians.
This willful, reckless contempt for our democratic processes, for nature and for science-based decision-making is putting at risk nothing less than our food, our livelihoods and our very future.
If you feel disappointed, angry, or frustrated, if today’s decision feels like a slap in the face of all you hold dear, you are not alone. But take heart: the Enbridge pipeline is far from a done deal.
Today’s announcement doesn’t mean that Enbridge will be built.
This is our home we are talking about. We live here, we play here, we earn our living here. If you are anything like me, no doubt you have a special place somewhere in this extraordinary province that deeply connects you to who are, and who we are as British Columbians.
And if you are anything like me, I know you are not going to sit quietly and let it all be put at risk.
Over the past few years, we have come together to say no to Enbridge and no to the destruction of our climate. With courage, with creativity, and with community, we have come together to say yes to an oil-free coast, yes to salmon and spirit bears, yes to green jobs, and yes to a livable climate.
This dangerous pipeline and tankers proposal faces a groundswell of determined resistance thanks to your support, your voice, and your actions.
What the federal government consistently refuses to understand is that no means no.
And what today’s announcement means is that our work isn’t over yet. If we want to choose our future, we are going to have to fight for it.
First Nation legal challenges can stop the project. The BC government can stop the project.
That’s why Sierra Club BC is calling on Premier Clark to stand firm against the Enbridge proposal, in the face of federal pressure. Standing up for British Columbians means standing up to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his reckless agenda to export tar sands oil across B.C.’s salmon rivers and along our coast.
And that’s why we will also be supporting those First Nations who are headed to court to defend their lands and waters.
We are in this for the long haul.
As we go forward into the next stages of this campaign, look after yourself, and each other. Take some time outside to connect with this beautiful part of the world we are so lucky to call home. And then work with us, organize with your friends and neighbours—because this is far from over and we need all hands on deck.
Today, contact Premier Christy Clark and let her know you expect her to stand up for British Columbians and hold strong against this dangerous proposal. Her five conditions haven’t been and cannot be met.
We can do better than climate change and oil spills. We can build a future in which we respect the earth and respect one another.
It starts with us.
Together, with hope and determination,
