Baka ‘Pygmies’ are being forced from their ancestral homelands in the name of ‘conservation.’ Much of their land has been turned into ‘protected areas,’ to which they are given little or no access but where fee-paying game hunters are encouraged.
Wildlife officers and the soldiers that accompany them on patrols often harass, intimidate and sometimes torture Baka men and women and their neighbors.
Many Baka claim that friends and relatives have died as a result of the beatings.
WWF has a great deal of influence with the Cameroon government, and provides essential support and funding for these anti-poaching squads.
Please email the director of WWF and ask for the organization to stop funding the abuses committed by these anti-poaching squads.

I am extremely concerned to learn that Baka men and women in Cameroon are regularly victims of violence and intimidation by wildlife officers and the soldiers that accompany them on patrols.
It is my understanding that WWF provides essential funds and support to these patrols via the Ministry of Forests and Fauna. WWF therefore has a responsibility to make sure that these funds are not used to violate the rights of the the Baka and their neighbours.
I urge you to take immediate action to ensure that WWF’s funds are not being misused for this kind of abuse, and to recognise the Baka’s rights to live freely on their lands, including those set aside for conservation.
Yours sincerely,
