SumOfUs cutting back?

SumOfUs r1 ...

Dear Paov,

You don't usually hear from me, but my name is China Brotsky. I'm responsible for managing all the budgets and expenses at SumOfUs.

First, I want to thank you for making 2014 such a fantastic year at SumOfUs.

Together, we convinced Kellogg's to stop using palm oil harvested from the deforested habitat of endangered orangutans. Retailers ZARA and FCUK agreed to stop using angora fur from systematically abused rabbits. And as an organization, we reached more than 5.5 million members worldwide -- an all-time record.

But with just a couple of weeks to go before the end of the year, there's one key goal we haven't quite met: our fundraising goal in Canada.

To close our year-end fundraising shortfall and make sure we're in the strongest possible position going into 2015, we need to raise $250,000 by January 1.

And to do that, we need to hit our target of finding 500 donors in Canada before the end of the year. Will you chip in CA$10 to help us get there?

Yes, I'll make a year-end donation of CA$10 to help raise $250,000 by December 31.

Now, don't get me wrong. Even if we fall a bit short of that goal, we're still going to keep fighting the biggest corporate abuses. Because of the incredible generosity of our members, we're in a strong financial position.

But if we can't reach the goal of $250,000 by December 31, then one way or another we'll have to cut back on something we'd otherwise plan to do in 2015.

And just look at the fights we're facing in the coming year:

  • Final negotiations on the secretive Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) trade deals are very close. We're fighting to stop any deal that undercuts the right of governments to protect consumers, workers, and the environment.
  • After Canada's largest province announced a ban on bee-killing pesticides, we need to keep the momentum going to ban these toxic chemicals once and for all.
  • Monsanto is using their army of lawyers to bully state and local governments into dropping commonsense limits on genetic engineering and pesticide spraying -- and it's up to us to fight back.

That's just the beginning. But more than 85 percent of our funding comes in small donations from donors like you -- a nonprofit group like SumOfUs can only take on all these fights if our members support our work.

With so much at stake, we can't afford to go into 2015 with a fundraising shortfall that could force us to cut back. Will you make a year-end donation of CA$10 to help reach our goal of $250,000 by January 1?

Yes, I'll make a year-end donation of CA$10 to SumOfUs.

Thanks for all you do,
China and the team at SumOfUs
