CoDev Spring Appeal 2015 r1 ... s16
r18. May 2015
Dear Friend and Supporter of CoDev,
At CoDev, we believe that international solidarity begins with you and your commitment to our partners in Latin America.

This year, CoDev is celebrating 30 years of building partnerships for global justice. Together with our partners and supporters we make a difference in the lives of women, workers, and communities throughout Latin America. At CoDev, we believe that development begins with our own commitment to support communities working to improve their quality of life. We could not do any of this without you and the commitment we share. So first, let me thank you.

As a supporter you know the people in our partner organizations are taking action to create change in their lives. They are working to build hope in their communities by defending human rights, supporting educators, promoting worker’s equality and creating access to services.

A gift to CoDev this year will actively support trade unions and community organizations working in the areas of public education, women’s equality, worker’s rights, basic human rights and global education.

Solidarity in Action
I recently had the chance to visit our partners in Colombia, NOMADESC and SINTRACUAVALLE., accompanied by a representative from one of our Canadian Partners. Our delegation heard powerful stories from groups and communities working to defend the human rights of workers, indigenous peoples and afro-Colombians. Facing constant threats of violence, these leaders continue their work because of their strong belief in equality and justice. They told our delegation time and again how important international solidarity is to them and their ability to continue doing the work they do.

For an eye opening look at a critical issue facing one of the communities we visited, please watch this video on the water crisis in the city of Buenaventura. While residents of Buenaventura lack access to drinking water, large corporations operating along the port have unrestricted access to water.

It was a powerful reminder to me that CoDev delegations are important for sending a concrete sign to everyone watching that these leaders are not alone and that the international community continues to stand with them and offer their support. CoDev will continue to organize delegations this coming year and we hope that you will consider being a part of one of them!

Steve, a CoDev program director, also led a delegation recently. He travelled with teacher leaders from the BC Teachers’ Federation and the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation to Cuba. They visited the full range of educational institutions from early childhood to a pedagogical university and witnessed firsthand how the Cuban education system works. They were inspired and moved by the commitment to universal early childhood education and to arts and culture programs.

The Cuban unionists they visited showed their gratitude for a recent shipment sent down by CoDev, containing computers and printers (among other items). They took Steve around to every work station and told him what a difference the new technology has made to their lives because of the blockade, it is very difficult for them to obtain these supplies. They were still using computers from our last shipment, sent in 1999! Steve and the delegation also brought with them a number of laptops enabling the union leaders to stay in contact with members as they perform their duties in various provinces around the country.

Your support will help CoDev continue promoting social change throughout the Americas and strengthen our relationships with our partners for another 30 years to come!

I hope that you will continue to work with us for global justice.

Yours in solidarity,

Kathryn Janzen
Executive Director
