It's official: second-class citizenship goes into effect

Last Friday, part of Bill C-24 went into effect, officially creating a two-tier citizenship system.

Under this law, the only Canadians who can never lose their citizenship are those born in Canada who do not have another nationality (and are not eligible to apply for another nationality).

On the other hand, Canadians with another nationality (and those who are eligible to obtain another nationality) now have second-class status, even if they were born in Canada: under Bill C-24, their citizenship can be stripped.

50,000 for equal citizenship

When the proposed changes to Canada's citizenship laws were announced in Bill C-24, the BCCLA and our supporters fought it every step of the way. Now that the law has come into force, the BCCLA remains committed to challenging this new law in the courts. We will keep all our members and supporters up to date as we move forward on this commitment.

In the meantime, we've asked Canadians to say NO to second-class citizenship by signing on to our petition. So far more than 50,000 Canadians have stood up to say they believe in citizenship equality.

Let's make it 100,000

If you haven't yet, please SIGN THE PETITION.

If you have, please share it with your friends on Facebook and Twitter.

Protecting a valuable legacy

Equal citizenship is at the core of what it means to be Canadian. Nobody should be a second-class Canadian, no matter where their family comes from. Thank you for standing with us, and thank you for your commitment to equal citizenship.

Sincerely,

Josh Paterson, Executive Director, and the BCCLA team
