LABOUR ON THE FRONTLINES FOR AFFORDABLE CHILDCARE

Across Canada, finding adequate childcare is becoming increasingly difficult. There’s a shortage of licensed spaces and, even when one is available, the costs are a hurdle for most families. People are paying between $800 a $1,000 a month, creating a situation where less than 20 percent of the children in BC who need childcare can access it.
According to Michael Lanier, President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 1936, representing community social service workers in the greater Vancouver area, “there are wait lists in many of the licensed childcares [facilities] that are three or five years long.”One of the $10/day childcare rallies in BC, May 9 2015.
“Most often people are encouraged to sign up as soon as they’re pregnant. If they’re lucky their child space will come open for them sometime before their child is ready for kindergarten,” said Lanier in an interview with Rankandfile.ca. Read more!
C-59: CLEMENT'S HAMMER AGAINST FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WORKERS

The latest hack-and-slash budget implementation bill, Bill C-59, from Harper and his twitter-trolling President of the Treasury Board, Tony Clement, passed third reading in the House of Commons on June 9 and passed third reading in the Senate on June 22. Parliament was sitting longer hours in the stretch before the summer hiatus in order to push through this and other reactionary bills.
A lot of ink has been spilled on the civil liberties-busting Bill C-51. But Bill C-59 has garnered far less attention, except for the part where it retroactively exonerates the RCMP for destroying gun registry data that was subject to an Access To Information request. Read more!
FIGHTING CMBs AT TORONTO CITY HALL
On June 16 and 18 the Planning and Growth Management Committee of the city of Toronto held hearings on the Canada Post’s plan to end home mail delivery and install Community Mailboxes (CMBs). Just days before the hearings Canada Post announced it would keep door-to-door delivery in the downtown core of the city. The announcement would only save the service for 22,000 addresses.
The committee adopted a comprehensive set of recommendations for city council, that mostly focused on asking Canada Post to do proper consultations and costing for their plan to implement CMBs. On September 29 the Disability Issues Committee will discuss the issue and its potential impacts on people with disabilities in the city. The Planning and Growth Management Committee will meet again on November 16 to be updated on the issue.
