URGENT APPEAL: Hay River Strikers Face Scabs r1 ...

r18. The Town of Hay River's employees, members of the Union of Northern Workers-PSAC have been on the picket lines for 5 long months now.

The employer is delaying their return to work by hiring scabs to do their work, by refusing to meaningfully bargain a wage increase that matches the cost of living and by rejecting the UNW's offer to end the strike and send the outstanding issues off to arbitration.

It's worth repeating: the Town of Hay River is hiring scabs to do struck work. Hay River, a small tight-knit northern community, is being torn apart.

UNW-PSAC is asking us all to take a few seconds and send the Hay River mayor and council a message asking them to end the strike, heal the wounds and to agree to arbitration.

Please, take a few seconds this morning and send some solidarity to the Hay River strikers. Just go HERE.

Now to some good(ish) news from the Steelworkers.

By now everyone receiving this will know the story of the epic strike waged by the Steelworkers who work for Crown Metal Packaging in Toronto. This multinational corporation attempted to destroy their union and take their jobs away from them. They hired replacement workers – scabs – and they concocted a list of employees they attempted to bar from their jobs. It was a David-and-Goliath-like struggle between a company worth billions and 120 Steelworkers.

Thanks to allies and supporters like you and the thousands of LabourStart readers who sent solidarity messages, these workers had the support they needed to stand firm in their fight for fairness. In the words of Steel’s District 6 Director Marty Warren “The agreement is not nearly what these courageous workers deserve. They put everything on the line to go on strike. But these men and women can return to work with their heads held high. They are going back shoulder-to-shoulder, with their union, jobs and their principles intact.”

Everyone who joined our online action helped make that possible. Steel has asked that we pass along their heartfelt thanks for your acts of solidarity.

So thanks. Now get over to the Hay River campaign page and do the same THERE!

In Sol,
