WORKERS, UNIONS, AND THE ELECTION

By David Bush and Doug Nesbitt

When the writ for the federal election dropped on Aug. 2, both political parties and trade unions moved into full election mode. The lengthy 78 day election period puts spending constraints upon unions including direct election spending and third party campaigning on issues relating to the election. Most unions will be devoting their resources to reaching their membership on issues that matter to them.

The Canadian Labour Congress is running a non-partisan campaign on key issues. This election they are focusing on childcare, good jobs, healthcare and retirement. Some unions will follow this non-partisan line. Most other unions in the country are backing the NDP, save for a handful actively supporting the Liberals such as LiUNA.

For the labour movement it is clear that the NDP offers the best platform amongst the major parties. They have promised to repeal the cuts to Canada Post, strengthen CPP, rollback anti-union bills such C-51, C-525, C-377, create a universal Childcare program and create a $15/hr minimum wage in the federal sector. RESPECT BEGINS AT WORK: A SHORT LABOUR HISTORY OF THE SALVATION ARMY

By Marion Pollack

The Salvation Army’s mission statement identifies respect as a core value, which includes a commitment to promote the dignity of all persons. According to its website, the Salvation Army helps one person at a time, believing that each person is infinitely valuable and equally worthy.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), which represents the 31 municipal landscapers, lifeguards, pool attendants, by-law enforcement officers and office administrators, said the wage increases are a tool to combat the rising cost of living in the north. The agreed increases of two percent this year and another 1.5 percent in 2016 fall short of what the PSAC fought for – two percent in the first year and 2.25 percent in the second. Read more!

UNWINDING EGG FILMS' SPIN OF ITS ILLEGAL LOCKOUT

By Sebastian Labelle

Debate seems only to have escalated since I last wrote down my thoughts about the labour dispute at Egg Films (more recently re-branded as “Egg Studios”). I’ve received cordial personal rebuts to my arguments, but the online Egg Films PR campaign has taken an increasingly unsavoury intensity.

Let me be clear here before I go on that my ire is not directed at employees of Egg Films / Egg Studios – whether full-time or contract. My conversations with any of them have always been respectful and friendly. What I take issue with here is the online PR campaign directed by Egg Films, which is egregiously distorting facts and rapidly evolving into an assault on unions in general.
