Calling all writers and labour activists!

Rankandfile.ca is looking for contributions to a special series on “Labour and the Election.” The deadline to submit pitches for articles is Monday, Sept. 14. Contributors will receive $150 if their submission is selected. Your pitch could include such topics as:

  • The Fight for $15 movement
  • Work and the environment
  • Developments in labour legislation
  • Canada Post and the Save Door-to-Door Delivery campaign
  • Workplace health and safety
  • Electoral strategies
  • The limits and opportunities of electoral politics for workers and the labour movement
  • Pipelines, labour, and environmental justice
  • Fighting austerity
  • Workplace struggles
  • Unions as contested political spaces

Contributions are expected to provide a unique analysis and coverage of pressing issues facing workers and labour in Canada. Articles should be based on a meaningful interview or research.

C-51 AND THE HISTORY OF CANADA'S REPRESSION OF LABOUR ORGANIZING

Sometimes it’s worth reflecting on the struggles faced by earlier generations of labour activists when piecing together an understanding of where we’re at today. “Arm yourselves with sticks and clubs, give blow for blow. Fight like hell,” remarked Allan Campbell, a member of the National Unemployed Workers’ Association (NUWA), during a Vancouver street meeting in 1930. “We all know that there is plenty of food in Vancouver. If we cannot get it, we will take it.” Campbell’s statement still has meaning for unions and workers across Canada. NAVIGATING THE INS AND OUTS OF WORKPLACE CULTURAL DIVERSITIES

Have you ever experienced this reaction from a member? When a member complains to you that they have a grievance, you tell them the first step is to tell their manager and try to resolve the issue. Then the member looks at you horrified and even after you offer to go with them, they back off and won’t commit to the grievance.

As a shop steward of 12 years, I have experienced this all-too-common scenario in workplaces. It is really easy as a rep to leap to the conclusion that the member is lazy and wants you to do everything for them. Let us break this situation down a bit before we assume that. Read more!


TOKEN TABLE TALK: NEGOTIATIONS BEGIN AND ABRUPTLY END WITH COVENTRY CONNECTIONS

Talks between Unifor Local 1688 and Coventry Connections broke down as of 11pm on Monday, Aug. 31, with Coventry refusing to budge on the new per-ride fee structure.

While last Wednesday’s meeting with Ottawa mayor Jim Watson was successful in bringing Ottawa’s airport taxi drivers’ union and Coventry Connections, the city’s largest taxi company, back to the table for negotiations, talks lasted only 5 hours, breaking down at 11pm.

A loud protest at City Hall on Monday, Aug. 24 victoriously resulted in the meeting with the mayor. Read more!
