THE RISE AND FALL (?) OF THE BRITISH COLUMBIA TEACHERS' FEDERATION

This was not something new for BC teachers. In fact, this was the third strike in a decade. Teachers walked off the job for two weeks in 2005, and for three days in 2012. Teachers in BC have also refused to administer standardized tests, been on various types of work to rule for multi-month periods, and conducted a wide variety of local actions to push for various improvements. If you believe the mainstream media, Ottawa’s airport is under siege by a an unruly mob of tax drivers since the lockout began on August 11. For the most shrill commentators, it’s a full-on “crisis”.
At issue is a labour dispute now entering its fifth week, where drivers are refusing a 400 percent fee increase demanded by Conventry Connections (the main employer for airport cabs) and the Ottawa Airport Authority (OAA). Both want new levies amounting to $4.50 per taxi customer. Read more!

Through a combination of policy and propaganda, the Conservatives have started to dismantle the system of protections that have been put in place by decades of advocacy by labour organizations and unions. Their right-wing agenda has generated policies that hurt the environment, social services and all workers, especially People of Colour, Indigenous communities, women, the poor and other marginalized groups.
