ILLUSTRATING THE FREELANCER'S ORGANIZING MODEL

On September 2nd, the Graphic History Collective (GHC), a volunteer-run collective producing comic books on Canada’s labour and working class history, announced that it has joined the Canadian Freelance Union (CFU). The CFU is a Community Chapter of Unifor. This type of organization gives its members some of the benefits of unionizing outside of the traditional employment relationship. Such employment conditions are the norm amongst freelancers and independent media workers in general and the GHC collective in particular.
As illustrators of the radical history of British Columbia and Canada, union representation just seemed like a natural step for members of the collective. Read more!

The recent arrests of 27 men in Sydney, Cape Breton, charged with obtaining sexual services, raises concerns about the safety of sex workers.
The charges are laid under Bill C-36, a controversial law proclaimed in December of last year. That legislation criminalizes men who seek out sex workers.
Many sex workers and allies argued at the time that the legislation would make prostitution even more dangerous.
But that is not stopping Cape Breton Regional Police chief Peter McIsaac.
“This problem isn’t going away any time soon and we will assign whatever resources and whatever investigative techniques we have to to clear up that problem downtown,” McIsaac told CBC’s Maritime Noon. Read more!
The $15/hr minimum wage for federal regulated workers promised by the NDP will benefit over 100,000 workers. This is a good thing.
The NDP’s policy was a response to the pressure created by the Fight for 15 movement across the country and even the continent. The NDP’s promise, however, does not go far enough as it will not be fully in effect until 2019 and does not tie the increase to the rate of inflation going forward.
But the promise does create the conditions for the movement to extend its reach and put mobilizing pressure on provincial governments to follow suit.
