Yesterday we played a joke on the Conservatives and
embarrassed them pretty bad. Now we need your help to take this joke
to the next level.
The Harper Conservatives have been convicted of cheating in 100% of elections they’ve won (2006, 2008 and 2011). So yesterday as Harper was visiting the riding of convicted Conservative Dean Del Mastro, I made a website that looked like a real Conservative website designed to raise money for committing election crime. The donate button took people to the Prime Minister’s real fundraising page. The amazing thing is Conservative supporters actually started trying to donate to it! It made headlines including a story in The National Post highlighting the Conservative history of electoral crime.
"The hoax put the
spotlight on Del Mastro just as Prime Minister Stephen Harper was
paying a visit to the MP’s former Peterborough, Ont. riding on
Monday." - National Post
The Conservatives intervened and blocked our site from connecting to their fundraising page, thereby preventing their own supporters from giving them money. The video we released about the issue has been viewed more than 40,000 times in the last 24 hours.1
Watch the video and read the whole story here.
The Conservatives can afford to cheat in elections. We can't. In order to do what we do best - create funny media and pull off high impact creative actions - we needed to legally register as a 3rd party in this election. If we didn't do that we couldn't run the kind of people powered ads you've supported in the past. Here's the catch, as a registered 3rd party we need to hire a legal adviser and a financial auditor to properly submit 6 months of finances to the government after the election. This is going to cost us $8,000. People have already donated enough to get us nearly 20% of the way to that goal.
Can you chip in to make sure we can keep doing what we do best?
We are a tiny organization with very little overhead and no staff who earn a full time salary. Right now we have:
With your help we can continue this work, knowing that we aren't violating any election laws.
