AN INTERVIEW WITH ADRIANA PAZ RAMIREZ, CO-FOUNDER OF JUSTICIA FOR MIGRANT WORKERS

This week, on October 8th and 9th, Simon Fraser University is hosting a conference on Temporary Migrant Workers entitled “Labour Rights and Organizing Strategies”. RankandFile caught up with one of the speakers, Adriana Paz Ramirez, for an interview. Ramirez is a co-founder of and organizer with Justicia for Migrant Workers in British Columbia, a national grassroots organization advocating for the labour and immigration rights of migrant farm workers. She currently lives in Mexico and works with the Solidarity Center AFL-CIO where she organizes with maquila female workers near the US/Mexico border and with farmworkers in Baja, California. Her talk, taking place on the 9th, at 9:45 am, is based on her M.A. thesis, “Embodying and Resisting Labour Apartheid: Racism and Mexican Farm Workers under Canada’s Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program.” Read more!

With the Federal election just around the corner, it is a very exciting time to be part of the labour movement in Canada. As a passionate and active union representative, a member of the Toronto Airport Workers Council, and a worker at Canada’s largest airport, I feel optimistic about the possibility of change in our government and in turn a real change for the workers at Pearson.
We can’t deny that since the Conservatives have had a majority, some of the gains the labour movement have achieved for workers are being eroded. In Particular, at Pearson workers rights are being systematically dismantled with recent contract flipping. Read more!
When the writ for the federal election dropped on Aug. 2, both political parties and trade unions moved into full election mode. The lengthy 78 day election period puts spending constraints upon unions including direct election spending and third party campaigning on issues relating to the election. Most unions will be devoting their resources to reaching their membership on issues that matter to them.
The Canadian Labour Congress is running a non-partisan campaign on key issues. This election they are focusing on childcare, good jobs, healthcare and retirement. Some unions will follow this non-partisan line. Most other unions in the country are backing the NDP, save for a handful actively supporting the Liberals such as LiUNA. Read more!
