AFTER HARPER: CONFRONTING THE LIBERALS

So there we have it. Harper is gone. The Liberals surged from third place to win in this marathon election. The NDP, which was leading in the polls in August, slowly lost steam after they promised to prioritize balancing the budget and refusing to tax the rich. Ever the opportunists, the Liberals seized on this opening and ran a campaign that rode of a wave popular discontent with the Harper government, drilled home the message that they would tax the rich and spend money on infrastructure to pull the economy out of recession.
The Harper agenda has been dealt a severe blow this election. There is no question a majority of Canadians expressed their desire for change. But the election campaign and Liberal majority victory has proven pretty hopeless at clarifying what sort of change is needed. Read more!
In the year of Vancouver’s incorporation as a city in 1886, industrial unionists formed a local branch of the Knights of Labor. The union, which sponsored the Asiatic Exclusion League, played a prominent role in the riot that erupted the following year. Three hundred white workers expressed their animosity towards the Chinese migrant labourers who they felt were taking Canadian jobs through their willingness to be paid less for more work. Occupying City Hall, they stormed through the city, pulling down shanties, burning the homes of Chinese residents, and ultimately sending them fleeing to New Westminster. Read more!

Progressive parents and educators should be excited to learn that the repertoire of social justice texts aimed at children has been growing over the last few years. Hard Ball Press recently published a new addition to this list in 2015 titled Joelito’s Big Decision, authored by Ann Berlak and Daniel Camacho. This playfully illustrated and bilingual (English and Spanish) book follows the experience of a young boy, Joelito, who is pressed to learn about the experiences facing low wage fast food workers employed at his favourite restaurant, Mac Mann’s. At the same time he learns of the importance and meaning behind the growing living wage movement in the United States. Read more!
