Last night's important news, and our response in Canada:

Dear Friends,

Late last night we got some big news that TransCanada asked the United States government to “pause” its review of the Keystone XL pipeline. In response, my friend Bill McKibben said that “clearly TransCanada has lost and they recognize that. It’s one of the great victories for this movement in decades.”

For me, it was a reminder that four years ago, the fight to stop this pipeline in the United States was fired up by a historic sit-in at the White House. Now we have a chance to do something similar and make history in Canada.

Hundreds of people have already told us that they’re coming to Ottawa for the Climate Welcome sit-ins. Over four days people from coast to coast will risk arrest to call on Canada’s new Prime Minister to take bold climate action by freezing tar sands... expansion and committing to a justice based transition to a clean energy future.

We’re not sure what the United States government is going to do about Keystone XL, but we know that it’s up to us to send a powerful message to our new government. We know that for Canada to live up to its global climate responsibilities, we have to leave the majority of tar sands reserves in the ground.

This is our chance to make history -- I hope you’ll join me in Ottawa.

In Respect and Solidarity,

Clayton Thomas-Muller
