Uzbekistan: Brutal crackdown on human rights defenders

Two new campaigns - a major prize.

In today's message I want to highlight two new online campaigns from the International Union of Food Workers (IUF), and also to invite you to nominate a candidate for the prestigious Arthur Svensson prize.

Let's start with Uzbekistan, where the government continues its brutal crackdown on human rights defenders documenting the massive use of forced labour in the cotton harvest. In recent years, the Uzbek authorities have sought to deflect international criticism of forced child labour in the cotton fields by substituting coerced adult labour. The World Bank, which is financing the 'modernization' of Uzbek agriculture, is supposed to be monitoring the presence of forced labour. Meanwhile, Phillips Seafood, a US company with a chain of seafood restaurants on the East Coast which also has outlets in airports and casinos, and markets processed seafood products, relies on brutal exploitation and disposable jobs for their Indonesian crabmeat. Most of the production workers at the Phillips Seafood crabmeat factory in Lampung, Indonesia are women; 60 percent of these workers have no permanent jobs. They're on permanent standby, and never know when or if they will be called to work by text message. Learn more and support their campaign here:

Finally, once again the Norwegian labour movement is sponsoring the Arthur Svensson International Prize for Trade Union Rights for 2016.

Trade unions from around the world are invited to nominate candidates before 31 December 2015. Your nomination must include arguments for why the candidate is nominated. It must also be clear who is making the nomination, and the nominator's relationship with the proposed candidate. The prize will be presented in Oslo in June 2016. Nominations must be made in either English or Norwegian to
