CETA & TTIP could lock-in fossil fuel exports to Europe

In May 2014, a ship with 600,000 barrels of tar sands bitumen from northern Alberta arrived at the Repsol refinery in Bilbao, Spain. It was the first shipment of tar sands crude to arrive in Europe. While that is distressing, the Natural Resources Defense Council has projected that Europe could... be receiving 700,000 barrels of tar sands bitumen a day by 2020.


Trudeau's oil minister says NEB review of Energy East pipeline will not be stopped
The Council of Canadians has joined with numerous others to call on the Trudeau government to halt the National Energy Board (NEB) reviews of the TransCanada Energy East pipeline and the Kinder Morgan TransMountain pipeline projects.

Saskatoon chapter activist calls for an end to subsidies for the fossil fuel industry

Canada provides US $2.74 billion a year in subsidies to the fossil fuel industry. About 60 per cent of that comes from the federal government, with the rest coming from the provinces (including Saskatchewan). An additional US $2.7 billion a year is provided through Export Development Canada, which is wholly owned by the federal government...

Barlow speaks against CETA in Karlsruhe, Germany

Council of Canadians chairperson Maude Barlow spoke at a public forum in Karlsruhe, Germany today on the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), the United States-European Union Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and the investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) provision.
