SCUMBAG OF THE YEAR 2015: CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

It’s that magical time of year again. Where we gather with our closet friends and family for food, drinks and to swap stories about the scumbag employers making our lives miserable. As per tradition, we at RankandFile.ca take this time of year to bestow our coveted Scumbag of The Year award on the one special piece of human filth employer or politician whose actions made workers’ lives hell in 2015.
The Rules
In the comment section below, let us know who you think are the year’s worst bosses, scumbag politicians and right-wing hacks. There are plenty of scumbags around the world, so please limit it to Canada. We will compile a top ten list by the end of next week and you our readers will choose in an online poll the winner of our Scumbag of the Year award. Read more!
On Wednesday taxi drivers in Toronto took their battle against Uber to the streets. The protest was just the latest salvo in an increasingly bitter and seemingly complex war over the future city’s taxi industry. Since Uber rolled into Toronto in 2012 it has dramatically shaken up the city’s taxi industry and taxi drivers have been paying the price. Much of the mainstream press has covered this story as a battle between taxi license holders and Uber; a fight between an old corrupt system and a modern technological innovation. This tale of selfish cabbies versus the future was on full display after the protest as the press denounced protesting taxi drivers as “living in an illusion” and displaying “outrageous behaviour.” Read more!

After a long six month lockout that dragged well into the holiday season, British Columbia Automobile Association (BCAA) workers are joyfully heading back to work today, just in time for Christmas.
“We did it! We’re going back,” brightly announced a billboard, seen at the picket line throughout its 188-day stay on the curb. “Thank you for all your support.”
Approximately 70 Emergency Roadside Assistance dispatchers, call takers and administrative personnel had been locked out by BCAA since June 5, leaving managers to take the emergency calls. Read more!

The Liberals just couldn’t help themselves. They did it again.
Earlier they trampled over home care workers’ and healthcare workers’ rights. Now it is teachers’ and civil servants’ turn. An entire session at Province House without labour strife just wouldn’t be the same.
Trampling over workers’ rights. It’s such a cliché. Yet it is entirely appropriate.
Bill 148, the Public Services Sustainability Act, ensures that a wage framework of 0, 0, 1.0, 1.5, and .5 percent will be imposed on 75,000 teachers and provincial civil servants. Their salaries as a result will not even keep up with inflation. Read more!
