This is scary -- Tampax, Always, and other hygiene products very likely contain traces of Monsanto's toxic Roundup weed killer.
A study by the University of La Plata in Argentina found that 85% of tampons, cotton, and other hygiene products contain traces of glyphosate -- the primary ingredient in Roundup. The World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer says the chemical is definitely toxic, probably carcinogenic. And this is what millions of women are exposing themselves unknowingly to every day.
I've been a SumOfUs member for four months. When I heard about this possible health risk to myself, my friends, and my daughter who lives in Argentina, I decided to start a petition on SumOfUs Community calling on Procter & Gamble, to stop sourcing cotton sprayed with glyphosate.
Monsanto's Roundup is the world's most popular weed killer and most of the cotton in countries like the US and Argentina use Roundup-resistant GM cotton. Traces of this toxic herbicide have also been found in our food and, now we know, feminine hygiene products.
Public pressure is mounting, and some countries like France, Colombia, and Sri Lanka have placed restrictions on glyphosate to protect people and the environment. Now it's time for Procter & Gamble to commit to sourcing glyphosate-free cotton for hygiene products like Tampax and Always.
