Dear Friend and Supporter of CoDev,
Berenice Celeyta has dedicated her life to defending human rights and achieving systemic change in Colombia. Her work as a forensic anthropologist investigating disappeared Colombians led her to found NOMADESC in 1999.
Colombia has the highest number of displaced people in the world: more than 5.7 million Colombians are internally displaced.
The name NOMADESC stems from the nomadic existence caused by forced displacement. NOMADESC is trying to address this issue by helping marginalized communities to defend their human rights through education, research, strategic litigation and political advocacy. Based in Cali, NOMADESC works principally in south western Colombia—a region characterized by the intensity of the social and armed conflict suffered throughout the country. “It’s truly savage what has been done to the natural environment and to the indigenous, afro-descendent and farmer communities that live in the region,” says Celeyta.
Just one example: more than 6,800 people in the town of Morales lost their livelihood because of a dam construction project. Their land was flooded. Their food sources (fish, plants and animals) destroyed.
NOMADESC is there to help communities by providing human rights education courses to address the fallout of such mega-projects. By far, their most ambitious project to date and one that promises to have far reaching consequences is the creation of a Proposal for Transformative Peace from the Grassroots in Colombia. It seeks a resolution to Colombia’s armed conflict, justice and reparations for its victims, and the prevention of future human rights abuses. NOMADESC is working with communities and social movements to enable them to participate in Colombia’s ongoing peace process, and to advocate for the changes needed to end inequality, discrimination and the systemic violation of human rights in Colombia. NOMADESC’s innovative approach creates change from the ground up: through education and capacity building, traditionally marginalized communities come together to raise their voices against systemic human rights abuses and propose solutions and alternatives for a more just society.
The power of this project has prompted significant support from one of Canada’s strongest unions, and CoDev’s newest Canadian partner, UNIFOR. Would you consider joining them? Lending your support to this important work?
Your gift will help to provide transportation, food, lodging and education materials for 50 human rights defenders.
Your gift will help cover the cost of strategic litigation for human rights cases.
Your gift will help let the world know about the reality faced by the majority of Colombians, and their vision for change.
Your gift will have an impact.
At CoDev, we are privileged to work with organizations like NOMADESC: people dedicated to making their community and the world a better, more just world.
We have this opportunity because of our supporters…people like you who understand and believe in the importance of working with NOMADESC. We hope you will keep this in mind as you consider your annual gift.
As a nonprofit organization dedicated to building partnerships for global justice, we value you as part of this journey.
Your annual gift makes a difference.
You have been part of CoDev over the years. You know CoDev is uniquely positioned to build solidarity and strong partnerships. These partnerships contribute to meaningful change on the ground and sustainable momentum for social justice, like we see with Berenice and the dedicated people of NOMADESC…like we see with each and every one of the impressive organizations with which we work.
We’re inspired by Berenice and people like her all over Latin America. We’re inspired by
your commitment to helping them overcome the struggles she and her colleagues face every day.
This is solidarity.
In Solidarity,

Kirsten Daub
Acting Executive Director
