CHALLENGING ANTI-BLACK RACISM ON CANADIAN CAMPUSES
When students and instructors came together at the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, on November 27th, they marched through campus and presented a set of demands to a representative of the university president. Addressing the many manifestations of racism at the university, with a focus on the experiences of African/black students and faculty, it was the first event of its kind. That may be because only about one per cent of the student population is black, or maybe the history of inequity and exclusion has been strong enough to dampen the belief that protest matters. But it happened and it looks like there’s much more in store. Read more!
SOLIDARITY WITH UFCW 1400'S SEVEN OAKS WORKERS

Workers at the Best Western Seven Oaks Inn in Regina have been walking the picket line since December 28. In a show of solidarity, at least a hundred supporters joined the strike on the evening of January 6. Despite the support, however, Seven Oaks is still operational, even though workers and union representatives insist that the employer is losing business.
After two months of negotiations, talks broke down between management and UFCW Local 1400, the union representing about 113 Seven Oaks employees. Read more!
NOVA SCOTIA CAN AFFORD TO RESPECT ITS PUBLIC SECTOR WORKERS

One of the best parts of being a teacher is when students let you know they appreciate the work you do.
It happens more than you might think. Despite the common, timeless sentiment that kids-today-ain’t-got-no-respect, students do express their appreciation in lots of ways: a thank-you in passing, a question that shows interest in what they’re learning, a compliment delivered via a parent at parent-teacher, the occasional goodie or card at holiday time.
Any teacher will tell you that appreciation coming from the kids is a great motivator. Read more!
