Friday, February 12 double-feature
7:00 - Uyghurs: Prisoners of the Absurd
9:00 - The Troublemaker

The festival gives a nod to International Development Week with Uyghurs: Prisoners of the Absurd and the BC premiere of The Troublemaker.

Prisoners of the Absurd recounts the incredible odyssey of 22 men from China’s persecuted Uyghur minority who were detained in Guantánamo as terrorists. These Turkic speaking Muslims, persecuted by the authorities in Beijing, escaped to the Middle East where they were captured and sold as terrorists to the American forces.

Sponsored by Amnesty International - BC Chapter, Don Wright will introduce the film and hold a Q&A after the screening.
For over a year, the filmmaker followed the most unlikely President of the United Nations General Assembly, Father Miguel D’Escoto Brockmann – a Nicarguan priest, a revolution theologian, an advocate of the developing world, a reformer to make his film The Troublemaker. With a front row to how the UN dealt with some of the most severe crises to have rocked the world in recent years, the programme reveals how D’Escoto tried to change things, and sheds light on the UN’s opaque mechanisms. We show how in the only global government we have, the best intentions are thwarted, but also the dysfunction, the pettiness, the power dynamics that have over time rendered progress impossible.

Sponsored by CoDevelopment Canada, we are pleased to have Director of Photography, Bliss Holloway on hand to introduce the film and provide an interactive discussion following the screening.
