PAOV – There's a new petition taking off on Change.org, and we think you might be interested in signing it.

MY MOM WROTE THIS HEARTFELT LETTER ABOUT HER PARENTS (MY GRAND-PARENTS), HAROLD AND VIRGINIA CAMERON. THEY ARE BOTH IN THEIR 90’S AND WILL SOON BE SEPARATED IF WE DON’T ACT. PLEASE TAKE A FEW MINUTES TO READ MY MOM’S LETTER AND SHARE IT. LET'S BUILD SOME AWARENESS AROUND THIS ISSUE FACING OUR AGING VETERANS. - Gina Bell

To whom it may concern,

We live in an unstable world where we are bombarded with stories of high divorce rates, school shootings, and terrorist attacks. It’s easy to get caught up in all the negativity, but if you look hard, you can always find happy stories to balance out the bad ones.

My parents are a shining example of a marriage success story. My Dad was a brave World War 2 soldier who met his English bride and brought her home to Canada. Together, they built a happy life, raised four successful children, and have 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

I would like to say that Veterans Canada and Continuing Care have been very good to us . It has worked very well until this stage where they now need 24 hour care.

They have now been married for almost 70 years, and after living happily together all this time, this veteran and his war bride are going to be separated.

Due to his Alzheimer’s, it is becoming impossible for my dad to stay at home. As a veteran, he can go to a Veteran’s home, but the rules do not allow my mother to go there with him. It is really a heartbreaking situation, and one that doesn’t seem fair. I cannot believe that a facility that is run by the government will not accept a wife (who is developing dementia and also needs to have 24 hour care ) and she has to go to a different full time care home than her husband of 70 years.

They now have home care in their apartment but it is very expensive to pay for 24 hour care for them both and it is getting to the point where they need more. They sit in their chairs and hold hands, say they love each other and I have to tell them they are going to be separated because of some ridiculous law where our federal government and our provincial government can't cooperate. Can someone explain to me why our entire family is being tortured this way? My dad is 92 and my mom is 90 and all I can say is that this cruel treatment is heartbreaking. It is the same amount of money coming from the government's budget to put them together as it is to separate them.

Thank you,

Pamela Campbell
