Brussels, 4 March 2016 (ITUC OnLine): The ITUC has endorsed a petition call from its Regional Organisation for the Americas, TUCA, and Brazilian affiliate CUT, in defence of former Brazilian President Luis Inácio Lula Da Silva, as a conservative campaign against him and his family intensifies.
Sharan Burrow, ITUC General Secretary, said "Lula presided over a period of huge social and economic progress in Brazil. Powerful forces in Brazil are seeking to turn the clock back, undoing the progress his government made and returning the country into the hands of a small but all-powerful elite. We are calling on trade unions, and all those who cherish progressive values and democracy, to join the call launched by TUCA. The prospect of Brazil returning to its infamous past is a threat to the people of Brazil and indeed to the Americas and the rest of the world."
