Hefferman ayant omis de quitter sa chambre à l'heure convenue.
Petitioning Calgary Police Commission, Howie Shikaze
One year ago Anthony was taken from this world by a Calgary Police Officer, a man charged with protecting the public. To this day that officer has NOT had to answer ASIRT's questions and has since been put back on active duty AND been involved in a second fatal shooting.
This is Anthony's tragic story:
On Sunday March 15, 2015, Anthony checked into the Super 8 Hotel for one night.
The next morning he failed to check out at 11AM.
The maid and later the hotel manager became concerned. The hotel master key was used by the manager to enter the room but the bar latch was secured.
Their difficulty in communicating with Anthony caused them to be concerned for his health.
The hotel called for assistance and soon the police and EMS arrived.
The police tried to communicate with Anthony for approximately half an hour through the bar latched door until it was decided that for Anthony’s welfare they should enter the room.
According to ASIRT's discussions with the police - EMS arrived and were told by the police to remain downstairs. (Remember - on a wellness check). Five police officers broke down the door and entered the room. Anthony stood up and raised both hands above his head. In one hand he held a small lighter and in the other a small syringe (this again is according to what we're told). The police instructed him to drop the items. As with previous communication attempts and what ASIRT was told, Anthony did not comply. One of the police officers then used a TASER on him.
Anthony fell back on the bed. He stood up and removed the TASER from his chest. While one police officer (again) used a TASER on Anthony, the other fired five shots. He was struck three times in the head and once in the chest and (another bullet went through the window).
Anthony’s death occurred at approximately 3:45PM, and Calgary Police gave a statement to the press at approximately 9:00PM, yet his family was not contacted until 3:00AM, (approximately 11 hours after his death).
One year later – no answers! No Justice!
The family and the public should be given the basic decency of answers to the following questions:
1. Why a young man, who was causing no public disturbance other than missing a check out time, warranted five police officers to bust down his door, thereby escalating the situation when there hadn't been one until then?
2. Why couldn't five police officers detain a young, unarmed man without it resulting in death?
3. Why was lethal force required to take down an un-armed, 170lb man?
4. Why did it take more than 11 hours to report his death to the family?
5. Is it protocol to fatally shoot someone if the Taser is unsuccessful?
6. Anthony was not posing a threat to anyone. He was not causing a disturbance. So why on a wellness check did 5 armed police officers break down his door, taser and then shoot him when he was unarmed?
Please support our campaign and help the family and community find closure – as well as answers to these important public safety questions.
