Recently the Toronto Sun published an op-ed piece naming Thomas Mulcair the “best bet” for NDP leader, lauding him for his lack of “nutty far-left ideas”. The NDP’s swing to the right in the 2015 federal election under Mulcair arguably cost the party front-runner status and 60 seats. So it is no surprise that the Sun named Mulcair as their guy. The real surprise is the recent endorsement of Mulcair from the leaders of large public and private sector unions, including CUPE, NUPGE, USW, and UFCW. How do the editors of The Toronto Sun and the leaders of our national unions end up endorsing the same NDP leader? Read more!


LOOKING FOR SOLIDARITY: OCEANEX AND THE OP TRUST

The Newfoundland and Labrador Employers’ Council (NLEC) rages about the benefits of Public-Private Partnerships (P3s) after commissioning a report by two Memorial University professors. P3s are NLEC’s answer to what it calls a perfect storm of shrinking government revenue and increasing demand for services from an aging population. But there is mounting evidence and studies suggesting otherwise about P3s.

Ontario would be a good place to analyze P3 plunders and squandered shared assets. Read more!


REFLECTING ON QUEBEC'S COMMON FRONT

The Common Front of half a million Quebec public sector workers that coordinated negotiations and general strikes between health, education and government employees last fall was an inspiration.

DIGITAL MEDIA WORKERS ARE UNIONIZING LIKES IT'S 1999

Gawker Media’s editorial staff ratified their first union contract on March 1 with their collective bargaining representatives at the Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE). In addition to including important economic gains, the contract features innovations for workers at media startups that could set sector-wide standards. But digital media workers in the United States have a longer history of union activity in The News Guild-Communications Workers of America (TNG-CWA) from which organizers could also learn.
