REFLECTIONS ON LABOR NOTES 2016

With a record number of participants, 2016 Labor Notes conference in Chicago started off with a bang. Day one of the conference launched amidst demonstrations across the city, as the members of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) staged events at schools, prisons, universities, and fast food outlets demanding economic and social justice for American workers. Teachers and activists converged on City Hall later than afternoon, beginning a 28,000-strong march after powerful speeches by former CTU president, Karen Lewis, Jesse Jackson, and a handful of rank-and-file activists. FIGHTING FOR $15 AND THE FUTURE OF CANADIAN LABOUR

On April 15, workers and community members throughout Canada will join together and take to the streets to demand better work for all. We ride upon the waves of recent victories in California and New York where workers won a $15 minimum wage in their states. The most immediate lesson is a simple one, when workers organize together, they win.
While the specific tactics and demands may look different and vary across each region what we are united in is our goal for fair work and economic justice. Read more!
REBUILDING LABOUR IN A TORY HEARTLAND

An angry, boisterous crowd of hundreds marched through Brockville, descending upon the downtown constituency office of Bob Runciman, Ontario’s Solicitor General and MPP for Leeds-Grenville. The protesters, most of them OPSEU members on strike against the Harris government, wanted words with Runciman but found his office doors locked. Between speeches and chants, OPSEU members mockingly re-created the grim events of a few days earlier when the Ontario Provincial Police riot squad attacked and beat OPSEU pickets at Queen’s Park in Toronto.
