In recent years, BC’s welfare ministry has radically changed the way it delivers services making it very difficult for the most marginalized people in the province to access basic services. That's why the Poverty Free Action Team is proud to release our latest Poverty Mythbusters video telling a real story about trying to access welfare and disability benefits in BC.
The video also arrives as we rethink welfare for the April edition of our #RethinkPoverty campaign. Each month, we’ll be focusing on one of the seven pillars of a comprehensive, provincial poverty reduction plan. In April, we’re Rethinking Welfare. Check out the calendar below for links to previous months, and to see what’s coming up next!
On Wednesday April 13th, for the fifth time, MLA Michelle Mungall introduced Bill M218, Poverty Reduction and Economic Inclusion Act, 2016. Recent polling shows that voters from both major political parties want the provincial government to implement a poverty reduction plan. Email the Premier and tell her to support the Poverty Reduction and Economic Inclusion Act.
The BC Poverty Reduction Coalition is calling on municipalities and local band councils across BC to take action in support of a comprehensive poverty reduction strategy for the province. We are calling for action from individual councils and from the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM). We are urging city councils to do two things:
To this end, the Coalition offers for use by all BC city councils a draft resolution to council and a draft UBCM resolution. We also offer a draft resolution for Local Band Councils. Please take these to your council and urge them to take immediate action toward a BC Poverty Reduction Plan!
