A photo exhibit examines the pressures the refugee crisis puts on familial bonds.

Many of the hardships of the Syrian refugee crisis are highly visible: the tent cities, the overloaded boats, the lines of migrants that stretch as far as the eye can see.

But some of its most poignant scenes unfold in private.

The refugee crisis has disrupted the lives of countless families, many of which are broken apart by the trauma and the journey itself. Photographer Liam Maloney has been documenting the lives of such families, and their attempts to stay connected amid the tumult.
