Further consolidation of our food system is bad news It’s true, the “Big 6” pesticide and biotech corporations are angling for even more control of our food system.
First Dow and DuPont announced their engagement late last year, then Syngenta agreed to a bid from ChemChina — and now Monsanto is looking to join forces with Bayer (or maybe BASF).
These mega mergers are bad news for all of us — and especially for farmers.
The White House has the authority to put the brakes on these mergers. And if they go through, just three corporations will control more than 65% of global pesticide sales, and more than 60% of commercial seed sales.
Signing off on these mergers would signal a doubling-down on a failing approach to agriculture that has given us superweeds, superbugs and dramatic increases in the use of hazardous chemical cocktails. Yet global experts have made it clear that we need to invest in sustainable farming practices like agroecology, rather than genetically engineered (GE) crops that increase pesticide use.
Tell President Obama to step in and protect the future of food and farming.
These mergers also raise serious anti-trust concerns, including increased prices and reduced choices for farmers.
Through brute force, market manipulation and a powerful lobby, the Big 6 already have unprecedented control of our food and farming system. Now they’re looking to push the GE seed/pesticide treadmill even faster to sell more and more of their products.
Urge President Obama to stop Big 6 mergers, now.
